The Mayer family, made up of the engineer Hans Mayer, his wife Dr Grete Mayer and their son Peter, first came to Obertauern as winter tourists in 1951. They liked it so much that three years later they moved to Obertauern and in 1957 began building the Römerhof Hotel. At that time, the hotel had about 35 rooms (half ofthem with shower/WC, the others with running hot and cold water).

In 1999, convenience was greatly improved by the construction of an underground car park.
