FROM THE ROMAN ROAD TO THE RÖMERHOF

The beginnings of the 4-star-superior hotel Römerhof

Since the foundation of the hotel, we have been aware of the unique location of the house. Its position on the Roman road to Virunum, now Zollfeld, leading to the pass over the Radstadt Tauern range had been a frequented crossroads for travellers for centuries. Many Roman milestones and documents confirm this, and this is also why we decided on the telling name Hotel Römerhof for our house. We, your hosts the Mayer family, have developed further and so now the third generation of our family has taken over the reins of the hotel.

Therefore, we also try to constantly develop our Römerhof further, improve our services and let new ideas come to live – to ensure the well-being of our guests and employees. It is not easy to summarise our eventful history in just a few words. There have been many milestones, each of which has greatly influenced the Römerhof and has been engraved in our memories. Join us on a journey through time.

The foundations were laid

Some accommodation facilities had already come to life in 1957 at the Radstadt Tauern, when Ing. Hans and Dr. Margrethe Mayer opened the doors to the Römerhof, after two years of construction work. The idea for the hotel at the Tauern was born due to their boundless love for nature and winter sports. An abundance of family enthusiasm, hard work, and extraordinary thirst for action imbued the 35-room hotel with life in 1958/59.

Die Beatles at the Römerhof

The Beatles on the way to lunch at the Hotel Römerhof. The shooting of the legendary Beatles movie “Help” from March 13th to 15th in 1965 were a real highlight for Obertauern. The uproar of the media, countless documentations on the radio and TV raised the degree of awareness for the ski region Obertauern.

Inauguration of our indoor pool

To be innovative and game-changing has always been the ambition of the Mayer family. So we once more became pioneers in the hospitality sector by opening the doors to our new indoor pool and sauna – a real luxury at that time – in the season of 1971/72.

Extension and renovation

In 1976 construction works at the so-called northern tract followed. Due to the rising number of guests in Obertauern and the high demand for accommodation at the Römerhof, the building was extended to include a total of 55 comfortable rooms, constructing 20new, contemporary studio rooms. The dining room was extended too.

Purchasing the Schaidberglift for more skiing fun

Divider

By purchasing the Schaidbergbahn in 1984 – together with Erich Perner - Peter did not only make himself happy, but also his father Hans Mayer and of course, the enthusiastic skiers in Obertauern. Because later he developed it further to create a modern 6-seater chairlift. In 1994 also the 4-seater Achenrain chairlift was built. After his father’s death Peter took over the Hotel Römerhof in 1985. A lot has changed, but the good things are preserved.

Extension and modernization

Divider

Everything is growing. So, the 90s also brought great changes at the Römerhof. The conspicuous tower was erected and became a landmark in the region, adding two elegant tower apartments with 100 sqm each, furnished in contemporary Alpine style to the Römerhof. Further improvements were made in the course of the construction works like the new large lobby area with an inviting staircase and a lift. A further important improvement was the construction of the underground garage for our guests and us in 1999.

Direct access to the ski slopes

Divider

It was never family policy to rest on our laurels, and thus the house saw further improvements and extensions in 2004. Our ski bridge now provides direct and safe access to the slopes from our ski cellar. In the main building – the oldest part of the house – 14 new family suites with magnificent panoramic view were constructed, partly by combining the existing rooms. A new staff building with modern amenities was built and our RömerSPA renovated. This way we created a unique hotel with 140 beds – the size of today – with many luxurious amenities. In 2008, we were able to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Römerhof****S.

Hotel with fantastic view

Quality in all areas. In 2018, the stage was set for the “Römerbau” to take our traditional hotel an important step from the past into the future. New panoramic suites in modern style with design features including quality materials and breath-taking views now enthral our guests. The new restaurant, granting a superb view of the Alpine ranges, benefits from both a generous and elegant design. Social distancing is facilitated by the new buffet area with open kitchen. Furthermore, our employees can benefit from a new staff building with gym and carports.

On our way to the future

Divider

The future starts today. Our exact plans for the time ahead? They are a surprise. But there are some things you can count on: the hospitality, that lives in every detail of our house, the family-run hotel, the has grown over time, the soul and character of the house, that will remain the same. Also the third generation of the Mayer family dedicates themselves to your well-being, according to our motto “genuine and with heart”. From back then to now: the Mayer family, your hosts since 1958!
